Welcome to Los Altos

Spacious homes, charming village vibe, and walkable downtown

Los Altos is a small Silicon Valley city with a charming village atmosphere. Los Altos is highly sought-after for its larger lots, which are primarily 10,000 SF or larger. The captivating homes are located on quiet residential streets where residents enjoy an air of refined suburban tranquility. Los Altos is a diverse community, with everyone from young professionals to retirees to families calling it home. Its access to both suburban calm and an appealing downtown area attracts those looking for balance.

Los Altos largely consisted of undeveloped orchards and agricultural land until the 1950s. Today's real estate includes exquisitely renovated mid-century properties and spectacular contemporary homes. Los Altos’ prime Silicon Valley location, walkable downtown village, and spacious homes make it one of the Bay Area’s desirable communities.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Downtown Los Altos is concentrated on a six-block triangle bound by W Edith Avenue, S San Antonio Road, and the Foothill Expressway. More than 150 businesses are located along Downtown’s quaint tree-lined streets, and many of these are family-owned. Within this walkable area, you’ll find independent stores such as Maria’s for new and antique French and Italian home goods, Los Altos Hardware, and gem and mineral specialists Nature Gallery.

Downtown Los Altos’ small town vibe is encapsulated by restaurants that have served the community for decades. The delicious Mexican delicacies at Estrellita have been a Los Altos mainstay since 1958. Aldo Los Altos is a refined spot pairing delectable Northern Italian dishes with an extensive wine list, while Opa! prepares authentic Greek meals with fresh local ingredients. Stylish Los Altos Grill’s menu includes slow-roasted chicken, smoked salmon, and hardwood-grilled tri-tip. Other highlights include the French and Asian influenced tasting course at upscale Ambience, farm-to-table organic eats at Bumble, refined Mediterranean/Californian fusion cuisine at Cetrella, fresh sushi and sashimi at Zagat-rated Akane, and a variety of Japanese dishes at Sumika Grill.

Coffee shops include a Starbucks and high-quality local favorites such as Peet’s Coffee and Red Berry, while Lisa’s Tea Treasures has the unique ambiance of a Victorian tea room. There are also great sweet treats available at Japanese-influenced Satura Cakes and boutique ice cream parlor Tin Pot Creamery.

Things to Do

Los Altos is full of parks and green spaces. Lincoln Park and McKenzie Park extend beyond four acres, while Heritage Oaks and Rosita Park cover more than five acres. There are many sports facilities and children’s play areas within Los Altos’ parks, including lighted tennis courts at Marymeade and McKenzie parks. Shoup Park has beautiful picnic spots along Adobe Creek and a trail leading into the 6.2-acre forest at Redwood Grove.

Los Altos History Museum
features fascinating permanent and time-limited exhibitions tracing the area’s evolution from an agricultural paradise into a vibrant Silicon Valley tech hub. Los Altos Stage Company stages varied productions aimed at both adults and children in the heart of Downtown.

A farmers’ market brings fresh produce and gourmet takeout to Downtown Los Altos on Thursday evenings between May and September. The Los Altos Art & Wine Festival features talented artists and craftspeople from across the nation. There’s also live music, international food trucks, and a Kid’s Zone with rides and activities. The Festival of Lights Parade on the first Sunday after Thanksgiving sees marching bands and lighted floats move through the streets of Los Altos in an event culminating with the arrival of Santa and his reindeer.

Schools

Los Altos residents enjoy access to outstanding schools.  Public schools within Los Altos are operated by the Los Altos Elementary, Cupertino Union, and Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School Districts.
